Media Training Hub is proud to present a 1 day practical course in Location Sound Recording


Learn from a professional. Gary will talk about his career and experience as a location sound recordist and show the kit and techniques he uses on assignments all over the world.

Learn how to record high quality sound on location. This is a practical "how to do it in the real world" workshop where you will learn tips, tricks & shortcuts developed from years of experience.

Attendees will get hands-on practical experience with sound kit.

Topics will include:

  • How to set up radio mics, levels and frequencies
  • How to rig a personal mic
  • Etiquette & ethics
  • Best places to attach a radio mic to avoid clothing rustle and wind noise
  • When not to use a radio mic
  • Directional mics. What they are and how to use them
  • How to use a boom mic. Where to position it for optimum sound quality. Dealing with fatigue. Keeping it out of shot
  • Dealing with wind noise. How to record in very windy conditions
  • Dealing with background noise. When it's a problem, when it's not and when to move location
  • How and why to record an "atmos" or "wild" track
  • How to work with presenters, contributors and the public
  • Discuss the tutor's work and how the sound was achieved

Attendees will work on practical exercises. Each pair will be provided with a radio mic, a boom mic and mixer. You're also welcome to bring your own kit.

Course tutor: Gary Moore

Gary Moore is a naturalist and sound recordist, with over 30 years of experience recording on dramas, documentaries, commercials and wildlife programmes. After graduating from Bangor University in Marine Zoology, Gary worked as a researcher at the BBC before training as a sound engineer. His work has taken him all over the world, recording animals as diverse as humpback whales, a huge variety of birdlife, bears and bees everywhere from the USA and Asia to East Anglia.
