About Basic Cinematography

Launch your career as a Director of Photography, and create a striking look and feel for your films and screen work with Raindance’s practical Basic Cinematography course.

Learn how to successfully transfer the visuals of the film from your head onto the screen via the tools you have at your disposal, such as lighting, lenses, filters, framing and much more.

The course will run across 5-days: Monday, Tuesday, Friday will take place 6:30pm – 9pm, and Saturday and Sunday full days of 10am – 5pm.

Day 1: Aesthetics (Monday 19th April, 18:30 – 21:00)

  • Attributes of the visual image
  • Framing
  • Lighting
  • Lighting set-ups and variations
  • Three-point setup
  • Creating the look

Day 2: Film  (Tuesday 20th April, 18:30 – 21:00)

  • Film camera
  • Film stock
  • Lenses
  • Filters
  • Contrast
  • Light ratios
  • Light meters

Day 3: Digital (Friday 23rd April, 18:30 – 21:00)

  • Digital cameras
  • Comparison of film and digital cameras
  • HD and SD formats
  • Digital exposure
  • Digital signal
  • Timecode

Weekend: Hands-on workshop (Saturday & Sunday 24th / 25th April, 10:00 – 17:00)

Over the weekend, students will then have the opportunity to put into practice the theory they have learned by setting up and shooting a short scene with a specific “look”.

What will you achieve?

Upon completion of Basic Cinematography, students will have acquired the skills, knowledge and practical experience to then undertake cinematography, director of photography, or camera assistant roles.

How will you be taught?

A mix of lecture-style, demonstration and also practical instruction with tutor guidance. In addition, students will set-up and shoot a short scene.

Who should attend?

Basic Cinematography is suitable for those new to the art and science of cinematography, as well as directors, 1st ADs and camera assistants who want to gain a better understanding of film photography and lighting. It is also suitable for those seeking to refresh their existing knowledge.

About the tutor

Zoran Veljkovic SAS
is a British Cinematographer (born in Serbia) with over 30 years behind the camera.

He was classically trained in Eastern Europe where he studied the art and craft of cinematography with leading European filmmakers. He received a BA from the University of Arts, Belgrade (Specialising in Film and TV Camera).

A DoP since 1985, Zoran has assembled a serious body of work. He has been living and working in the UK since 1991. Working with directors such as Ate De Jang (known for “Drop dead Fred”, “Miami Vice”), Peter Howitt (known for “Sliding Doors”, “Jonny English”) he gained considerable amount of valuable experience. His feature films have won BAFTA and EMI nominations as well as prestigious festival awards internationally. He received Best Cinematography Award for his work on feature films “Bridge”, “After Fall, Winter” and “Sicilian Dream”.

Zoran’s rigorous early training enables him to push the envelope of modern technologies. He flawlessly moves between the worlds of features, dramas, commercials, and TV series.

Zoran is a member of Serbian Society of Cinematographers (SAS) as well as a BAFTA member.
